Meteora is a unique geological and cultural site in Thessaly, Greece, known for its spectacular rock formations and historic monasteries. The name “Meteora” means “suspended in the air,” referring to the monasteries built on top of towering sandstone pillars that rise up to 550 meters (1,800 feet). These rock masses formed around 60 million years ago and have been sculpted over time by natural forces like wind, rain, and seismic activity. The monasteries, dating back to the 14th century, served as a retreat for monks seeking spiritual isolation and still function as significant centers of Eastern Orthodox monasticism.
When the developer began excavating the site, he discovered a large rock beneath the entire building area. This posed an engineering challenge, as the rock had to be broken and removed to lay the foundation. However, once completed, the solid rock provided exceptional support for the structure, ensuring its durability for generations. Inspired by the ancient monasteries perched atop rocks in Greece, the developer decided to name the building “Meteora” to symbolize its strong foundation and connection to the rocky landscape.
